It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that pasta is the favourite food of the entire planet. From Asia to the Americas, people have been enjoying pasta from wheat or rice for millennia. Many countries claim the title of the birthplace of pasta, but one thing is certain: Italy has the lead in global pasta production and consumption.

Durum wheat pasta is an important part of Mediterranean diet, together with other plant foods like fruit, vegetables, beans, cereals and nuts. In Greece there are over 46 kinds of traditional pasta that are used to prepare delicious and healthy dishes.

Pasta is a good source of complex carbohydrates, which release the sugars they contain gradually. This is why pasta is a staple in the diet of athletes and people who follow a diet with a low glycaemic index. Pasta's dietary value relies exclusively on the starch it contains, as well as the fact that it can cover 50% of our daily needs in carbohydrates.

MYTHS AND TRUTHS

Many of us avoid wheat pasta because it contains gluten. However, the truth is that only people that are suffering from celiac disease should avoid gluten.

Another myth is that pasta is fattening. But let's take a look at the facts: a small portion of pasta (140 g) contains less than 1 g of fat and just 220 calories, but also contains 43 g of carbohydrates and 8 g of protein.

PASTA IN CHILDREN'S DIET

The nutrients and fibre contained in pasta are necessary for the proper development of children — not to mention their soft and easily digested form that makes them an easy and healthy option even for very young ages. And let's not forget that a pasta meal is an opportunity to have fun around the dinner table with the countless pasta shapes and colours, as well as its endless combinations with colourful sauces, veggies and other ingredients. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that children are the most enthusiastic pasta-lovers!
